ABA Gallery presents the exhibition Russian Art from Private Collections: Borovikovsky to Kabakov. This landmark exhibition is dedicated to showing exceptional examples of important Russian art spanning three centuries to the general American public.
The concept for the project emerged in response to the moratorium on exchange between Russian and American museums officially enforced two years ago, whose severe void is palpable across institutions throughout the American cultural landscape.
The exhibit is a collaborative effort between ABA Gallery and distinguished private collectors including Michael Baryshnikov and Vladimir Spivakov. "I am glad to support this exhibition which reveals the beauty and significance of Russian art to the American public," said Michael Baryshnikov.
In over the ninety works on view, there are startling examples by RussiaÂ’s greatest 19th and 20th century masters such as: Vasili Perov, Mikhail Nesterov, Alexei Savrasov, Vladimir Makovsky, Lev Bakst, Constantine Somov and many others. Artists of the Russian avant-garde, so richly represented in the show, are particularly crucial to the artistic development of 20th century art and thus reveal the enormity of Russian influence on world culture.
For over thirty years, ABA Gallery has worked tirelessly with Russian and Western museums and institutions to promote and sponsor seminal exhibitions of significant Russian artists such as David Burliuk, Boris Anisfeld, Natalia Goncharova, Boris Grigoriev, among many others. During this time, the Gallery discovered, identified and placed rare examples of Russian art into major public and private collections throughout Europe and the United States.
A project of this magnitude could not have been accomplished without the support and assistance of many individuals, especially Mikhail Shvydkoy, Special Presidential Representative of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation and Ambassador at Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation who supported this project from its inception.
Exhibition opens in NY on Friday, May 11, 2012 and will run through May 25.
