Yorkshire News to Delight Yorkshire Pudding Eaters Everywhere - Guess What The County's Favourite Food Is? Asks YorkshireTimes.co.uk

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 29, 2012 ) North Yorkshire, UK -- Yorkshire readers may have had their suspicions, but now it's a fact, or at least those asked for one survey seem to think so anyway.

When asked to name their favourite local food or drink, the people of North Yorkshire & Humber chose the humble Yorkshire Pudding as their favourite local food.

But now this dish isn't just making local news. It's a great piece of Yorkshire news that the Yorkshire Pudding will be put forward to the final of the competition to find Britain's best local food, run by PGI Welsh Lamb. The Pud will join eleven other regional favourites in an online showdown to choose the UK's Favourite Regional Delicacy.

The competition is part of a EU-backed campaign to find new regional favourite-food candidates for Protected Geographical Status (PGI), under which foods may only be produced for labelled sale in the region they're named for, such as Melton Mowbray pork pies, Cumberland sausages or indeed Yorkshire pudding.

This doesn't mean that someone in a pub in Kent, say, wouldn't be able to make Yorkshire pudding, and would only affect those manufacturers producing and labelling their food as original. It might also mean that one day yorkshire pudding becomes Yorkshire Pudding, which has to be a fantastic bit of Yorkshire news.

Laura Dodds, of Meat Promotion Wales, which is leading the PGI campaign in the UK, said: 'While the winner of this competition won't automatically be given PGI status, it's a great way to get people thinking about the regional foods they are proud of and what makes them special.

'As a nation, we are very proud of our local delicacies and this competition helps celebrate that. We love that people have embraced the competition and used it to celebrate other fantastic regional specialities like the parmo.

'And, of course, the winner of this competition could consider applying for PGI status themselves to have the same success in the UK and in international markets that is already enjoyed by Welsh lamb.'

There are currently twenty-one foods and drinks in Britain with protected geographical status, including Cornish clotted cream, Scotch beef Mowbray pork pies, and Jersey Royal new potatoes.

A further twenty-eight are applying for PGI status, including Lincolnshire pork sausages, Anglesey sea salt, Colchester oysters, Lea Valley cucumbers, Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese and Stornoway black pudding. If they get it it will be a great news put in tourist information. Yorkshire pudding could does not have PGI status yet, but may do soon.

The parmo will go on to face other regional finalists, including our own Yorkshire pudding, Welsh cakes, Devon cream tea, Leigh-on-Sea cockles, London's jellied eel, Kentish cobnuts, Scottish haggis, and Irish stew.

The Yorkshire Times has also been given to understand that certain people to the west of our region are to enter a thing known as Lancashire hotpot into the final. This is believed to be some sort of a warmed up stew of meat and vegetables, though little is understood about the origins of this dish.

The Yorkshire Times wishes them every bit of luck as they go head to head with our esteemed Yorkshire Pud - somehow we think they may be needing it. May the best grub win! For regular Yorkshire News in all formats, please visit http://www.yorkshiretimes.co.uk/about
