Enter the new sounds of the Metro Detroit rock music scene in the form of Punkrockapalooza. This recent wave of small but hustling Detroit based bands have been storming into rock music venues and setting up quadruple billed events. Here these energetic rockers let it all out and tell you exactly what’s on their minds. You can be rest assured there will be nothing left to the imagination. These kids are telling the world what is on their their minds and the interesting thing is the world is listening.
The videos came out in secret from the Lansing, Michigan based event Punkrockapalooza at Uli’s Haus of Rock. But what happened after that was something short of rock and roll history. The videos of the ever eccentric Colleen Caffeine of Choking Susan were the first ones to break into off limits Japan. One video in particular, a take off of Iggy Pop’s classic, (also covered by Sid Vicious at one point) “Now I Wanna Be Your Dog” has surfaced in Japan video search engines. Keep in mind that the Asian continents have turned their back on Western culture and will not allow American websites into their social realm. But the thing is nobody has told that to Caffeine – she happens to be an exception and has been welcomed with open arms. The global speed and world attention paid to the music has earned the term, “Moto Rock”.
On the same bill as Choking Susan comes the ever impressionable Disposable Society with street hero and long time Detroit rock veteran, Jeff Fike, (affectionately known as Fikey on the street). Their videos have been surfacing strong too on the search engines. People are looking at their homemade efforts and have watched in disbelief as their fame has shaken the search engines to its core. People care about Detroit. The rock music and art videos that come from the mean streets of Detroit have been surfacing as far away as Australia, and Germany. Local heroes like artists Tracey Vitkay, and Chizzy, (the abstracts mad dream) are being blasted across the globe.
The real question is now that the world is listening to the Detroit night life what is to become of these artists? Ex- Art Director, Ted Cantu, (an advertising veteran) has been putting these videos together on a website called Hot Metro Finds. The idea here is to have a Yellow Pages type of directory of web videos. This “electric magazine” as he calls it requires no thinking. You just have to have a working mouse and a good set of eyeballs as he says. Time will tell how many more fans and interest this collaboration will attract. Signs show that there will be no slowing down.
