Dr. Brinkman has had a rich life of experience to draw on for his work. One of his most profound influences was that of his parents who were both Holocaust survivors. His mother, who spent six months in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, escaped the Nazi death march, but let herself be captured again so she could tell her sister how to escape. She later said the reason she made that decision was because, “I could not live the rest of my life knowing maybe I could have done something.” His father survived three concentration camps for over a year. His parents miraculously found each other after the war and emigrated to the United States.
