Friends and family members who were in contact with Fernandez shortly before his fatal boating accident warned him not to go out boating that night but noted that he was upset due to a recent fight with his girlfriend. Detectives also found out that he spent the hours before the accident at the Cocoplum Yacht Club drinking with friends, however rather alcohol contributed to his death cannot yet be determined.
