"We do all kinds of supersized prints for show walls, but step and repeats are a special breed," explains Klemp. The term ‘step and repeat' used to mean a stream of celebrities crossing the red carpet for a photo op; one would step onto the stage, pose and leave so the next actor could repeat the process. In the digital age "step and repeat" refers to the graphic process of duplicating images in a pattern. Simple lines of logos filling a backdrop are commonly used on photo op murals, but according to Klemp the process can get a lot larger and more complex. "Our prints can be up to sixteen feet tall and hundreds of feet long. Not exactly easy to print and hang," Klemp pointed out. "They can be stretched on frames or made to lay completely flat on media walls. We even do step and repeats on what we call ‘Living Walls' that have a 3D effect."
Past jobs have included stadiums, stage-size photos for fashion shows, back-lit walls for trade shows and portable interview booths. "You might be surprised. We've sent all kinds of step and repeat walls around the country for about every kind of event you can think of," Klemp said. The company even supplies special step and repeat backdrops for birthday parties, theme parties, weddings and bar mitzvahs.
"A step and repeat brands the background of every photo with logos, names and dates or whatever, which is the obvious benefit," Klemp said, "but people recognize these as a kind of social icon event. A step and repeat is really advertising the opportunity for a camera and a celebrity to come together. Set up one of these with a red carpet and some velvet ropes and people know what's coming," Klemp said.
Step and repeats are also assembled in several ways: Bars hanging from the ceiling, retractable banner stands, stretch frames made of pipes, portable expanding racks and site-built wooden frames are chosen to fit the venue.
