The company originally started out in a garage in 2010, manufacturing one of a kind custom made pens for top executives and of course all pen lovers. In August of 2015, Feeney Fine Writing Instruments released its first products onto the Amazon market place.
In contrast to the modernistic black acrylic pen released in August of 2015, the Classic Edition has the aesthetic look and feel of a high end executive work pen. The acrylic pen released last August comes in three colors, black, blue and red and has a viewing window on the barrel of the pen to view ink level reserves. It has an ultra modern look and the light acrylic makes it very popular with a younger crowd.
The Classic Edition currently comes in Stainless Steel and Matte Black. The pens, being metal are heavier and the balance of the pens became a very important factor in the manufacturing process. It had to be perfect. A pilot run was done on Amazon in mid December to get a feel for the reception it would receive in the real market place of public acceptance. The pilot inventory was sold out within a few days. The weight, balance and traditional aesthetic look of the Classic Edition pens were at first thought to be the determining factor. However, according to customer feedback and reviews, it was the smooth, even and consistent writing performance of the pens that was the senior factor in their popularity.
Michael Feeney, co-founder of Feeney Fine Writing Instruments shed a little more insight as to their success: "Fountain Pens deal in pure liquid ink as opposed to a roller ball or ball point pen where the ink is either in a paste or gel inside the refill. With a fountain pen, the ink is stored in a reservoir in the barrel of the pen in pure liquid form. The ink from a fountain pen is drawn from the barrel into the "feed". The feed stores the ink in a series of fins or vanes and it has a narrow slit from top to bottom which allows the ink to flow from the reservoir into the nib (tip of the pen) and onto your paper as you write. This interchange of ink is a very simple concept, but the quality of the nib and the feed is a vital factor in getting a steady, smooth and even ink flow onto your documents without blotching, skipping or leaking.
