Controversy Over Chinese 'Star Wars' Poster For 'The Force Awakens' Is Not What You Think

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Rank in the Top 10 Star Wars Posters.

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, December 17, 2015 ) Oak Brook, IL -- The recent Wall Street Journal blog post regarding the internet debate on the Chinese version of the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" movie poster seems to be more about the deletion of a longtime fan favorite Star Wars character (Chewbacca) from the poster than about race.

According to the Wall Street Journal blog post cited that "a person close to the Disney marketing campaign said that the changes were made to make more room for attention-grabbing spaceships and explosions, not to downplay Mr. Boyega." Mr. Boyega, a black British actor who plays the role of Finn in the new "Star Wars" film.

In fact, it seems that, according to the Wall Street Journal blog post, "Chinese "Star Wars" fans are more bothered by the fact that other, nonhuman characters have been cut from the Chinese poster completely. They included Chewbacca, Han Solo's shaggy Wookiee sidekick, and a new character, the pirate Maz Kanata." "Both are important characters," said Chen Tao, "a 31-year-old Shanghai "Star Wars" (fan) who runs the website StarWarsChina.

Mr. Chen's sentiments are echoed by "...other (Chinese) fan-group organizers." "The fan groups said they didn't think the changes were an issue of discrimination."
"I don't think that we (Chinese people) really have a tradition of discriminating against black people," remarked "Ding Yan, the Beijing-based director of 501st China, a local branch of a fan group that dresses up in "Star Wars" costumes."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is set to open in China on January 9th, 3 weeks after its United States debut on December 18th.

And, even with the controversy, the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" poster is popular with fans and is number two of the Top 10 Best Selling Star Wars Posters according to CheapMoviePosters.Blogspot.com.
