Americans Traveling To Foreign Countries Need To Stay Abreast Of The Most Current Travel Alerts.

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, November 28, 2014 ) Valley Cottage, New York -- Americans who are planning trips overseas for the upcoming holidays to visit friends and family or just for vacation must remain on guard at all times for those who wish to separate them from their belongings and cash. The following are five critical tips to keep in mind when scheduling the excursions.

Even if an individual watches the evening news with all the unrest in certain nations, it is not possible to know what it happening in lesser known areas of the world. The U.S. government sponsor a website that offers travel alerts and warnings. A warning is issued when there are reports of an unstable government, civil war, ongoing intense crime or violence, or terrorist attacks. A travel alert is a short-term warning that is for instances of an election season that is bound to have many strikes, demonstrations, or disturbances; a health alert like an outbreak of Ebola; or evidence of an elevated risk of terrorist attacks.

There are also credit card scams, which often go like this: A traveler is staying in a hotel and receives a call late at night that says there is some confusion with their credit card. The caller identifies himself as a staff member and wants to confirm information to the customer by reading the last four numbers of their account. The last four numbers will not be correct. Then they ask for all sixteen numbers and the expiration date. If an unsuspecting traveler does this, the crook then has their credit card information. In all instances when this happens, they should tell the caller that they will come to the desk to straighten out any problems. They will more than likely hang up and all information remains safe.

However much cash a traveler is taking on their trip, it should be divided up, so that all of it is not in one place at the same time. Good hotels will either have in-room safes or boxes that can be rented at the registration desk. Only take the cash that is needed for the day. Hide that in a good quality money belt. Leave all other money in a wallet in the safe.

Taxi cabs can often be a rip-off, and some taxi drivers are known for being less than honest. Even if a traveler is in a queue for a taxi at the airport with 20 or 30 people ahead of them, they should never accept a lift from someone who approaches them in plain clothes and asks if they need a taxi. The car will be unmarked and many times is it a very nice car. As tempting as it is to jump the line, decline the offer. Not only could a traveler lose their money, they could also lose their life.

People tell jokes about telling others not to drink the water when visiting Mexico. It is no joke. Always be prepared to brush teeth with bottled water. The bacteria in Mexico is very different from the strains of bacteria in the US. Ingesting any of these bacteria can result in spending the whole trip confined to the bathroom.
