A postmodern fable with touches of ancient Gnosticism, Sundown, Sunrise is the story of three young adults growing up during a war that is consuming their respective peoples. The Ge are a tribal society whose territory is coveted by the prideful and calculating Inhabitants; they are a peaceful people, but if war must happen, they are willing and able to fight.
As the violence spreads beyond the Ge's territory, young Ge warriors Calurframa and Gulumethwe must venture to seek help from the other peoples of the Lands before their society is annihilated. After her untimely expulsion from the Region, a children's society where the Inhabitants leave their young to raise themselves, Iro-Become-Pir must rush to end the war she helped to start before it consumes everything she knows.
On their quests, each discovers a world above their own, where powerful forces vie for control of everything. The three travel across cultures, times, and places, and even into other dimensions, ultimately recognizing that only by working together can they stop the mysterious beings that control their peoples.
About the author
Michael Cleaves is a writer living in Brooklyn. Trained as a historian of American art and literature, in which he received his PhD in 2010, this is his first novel. Ironically, given his academic training, it takes place on another planet altogether. Cleaves has also worked as a graphic novelist and routinely protests social iniquities, for which he has developed an impressive record of violations and misdemeanors (all charges have been successfully defended).
