Staycations: The Continued Rise and Rise of the British Holiday

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, July 29, 2013 ) Burford, UK -- An increasing number of Brits are choosing to stay in the UK for their holidays, and this looks to be a developing trend that will continue over the coming years.

A recent study approximated that 65% of UK residents will take their holiday period in Britain, and when compared to 41% in 2012, this is a dramatic increase in popularity for the “Staycation”. Reportedly, this increase equates to a £3.3 billion boost to the British tourism industry, taking it to an impressive £12 billion overall.

THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT

The 2012 Olympics restored a significant level of national pride, and together with the Queen’s Jubilee and the previous year’s Royal Wedding, proved to be catalyst to improving residents’ perception of Britain as a place to stay, enjoy, and celebrate. The bunting was out, the flags were waving, and the athletes performed admirably to take the Olympic team to a record medal haul. This national celebration raised awareness about the vibrancy of British culture, and has encouraged UK residents to sample some of the attractions across different parts of the country. This has also boosted levels of foreign visitors, who are keen to immerse themselves in the culture they witnessed during such a successful summer of 2012.

FOREIGN VISITS

The tourism industry in Britain seems to be in good shape, with Visit Britain having recorded a record number of visits from overseas visitors in May 2013 - 3.08 million in total. Inbound visits for 2013 look to be on target for a 3% increase, with the value of these visits rising 4.5%, although these statistics are subject to change depending on the business of the summer months. Britain is increasingly becoming a desirable destination for holidaymakers from across the world. By showcasing itself on the world stage in 2012, Britain has exposed its culture, sport, and impressive infrastructure - ensuring that we attract millions of visitors each year.

RECESSION IMPACT

If there’s one positive to come from the economic problems over the last few years, it is that people in the UK have woken up to the beauty and leisure opportunities that surround them every day. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland offer some stunning rural locations for soothing breaks, as well as plenty of vibrant, buzzing, cities. Staying in Britain is a much cheaper option than flying abroad, and there is plenty of outstanding accommodation to choose from, including charming self-catering holiday cottages. Self-catering accommodation has also seen a boost, with many people preferring to have the flexibility of buying and cooking their own meals. This is a more cost-effective option, especially for big family vacations.

SCENIC RELAXATION

Britain boasts some stunning areas of natural beauty, with popular coastal regions such as the Devon and Cornwall, as well as inland rural areas such as the Lake District and The Highlands. In England, the Cotswold countryside is also major attraction for tourists, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Cotswold cottages are some of the most beautiful properties in Britain, and their classically traditional exteriors are stuff of picture postcards.

Being one of the most popular areas of the UK to visit, there are a number of activities and attractions to enjoy in the Cotswolds. Quaint little villages and enchanting open countryside has inspired many artists and writers over the decades, and is continuing to attract visitors from across Britain, Europe, and the rest of the world. The area also offers plenty of pubs and restaurants, but perhaps the best way to experience the Cotswolds’ food is by sampling local produce oneself. The self-catering option isn’t just a cost-effective benefit, but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the cuisine of a region.
