Council Wants More Information on Short-Term Vacation Renters Industry

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, July 22, 2013 ) Victoria, Australia -- The Ashland, Oregon, City Council simply had too many unanswered questions on Tuesday regarding the logistics of vacation rental rules in the town. The Council will take up the issue in mid-August where it hope to attain more answers it is looking for.

The meeting was spurred the latest growth of websites that connect many local homeowners with tourists. The many Ashland residents have now begun renting out homes for short stays in a manner that the council feels is illegal.

Mayor John Stromberg stated that questions remain about whether vacation-style rentals cause parking problem, reduce availability for housing for longer-term renters, and whether negative impacts toward local bed-and-breakfast inns will be felt in the area.

Counselors stated that they need input from stakeholders, including those who operate vacation rentals illegal who may be afraid to come forward. The members of the neighborhoods in the area who feel they may be impacted in some way are also asked to make their way to the council meetings in order to allow the Council members to hear the spectrum of argument for the situation.

The Ashland Planning Commission along with department staff have recommended that vacation rentals in multi-family zones within the historic district would be allowable. Owners of such potential vacation rentals in the district would have to work through the planning process in order to secure conditional permits for the usage.

Vacation rental are currently allowed for homes within 200 feet of major streets, while the Planning Commission has suggested that the council direct commissioners ought study the allowance of rentals within single-family zones. Such homes are typically filled with houses rather than apartments and multi-home buildings.

Abi Maghamfar, who is president of the Lodging Association in Ashland stated: "People want to know who their neighbors are. With a vacation home rental, the people next door change on a weekly basis," Maghamfar previously said. "People don't get to know their neighbors. If you allow everyone to rent their homes out to tourists, you have a town that acts like a motel everywhere."

However, the fact is that people can rent out lodging to short-term tourists who bring their money into the area, and supply owners with supplemental income to spend. So the only real problem voiced is by institutions that are trying to dip their fingers into the pot, wanting unnecessary fees and regulations that only hinder the opportunity for money to come in. In other words, associations like the Lodging Association simply are upset they no longer have as much control.
