Currently, there are over 500 million people worldwide and 57 million people living with disabilities in the United States, meaning that 1 in 5 Americans are living with a disability. CNN reports that approximately 21 million American families include at least one member with a disability, and over 65 million Americans are caring for family members with disabilities and chronic disease. Between 1990 and 2000, the number of Americans who have disabilities increased 25% according to the Disability Funders Network.
