(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, July 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Police, Paramedics and other emergency responders are having an increasingly hard time breaking down the barrier of language. But now, new technology is being created to help them quickly translate words they need to know to hear and say to those they are helping.
A new device called ELSA, which stands for Enabling Language Service Anywhere is a handheld device that uses a cellphone signal to to give users access to interpreters who can translate over 180 languages. The interpreters worked for a company called LanguageLine Solutions, who are contracted by the maker of ELSA, a company called RTT Mobile, created by Charles Howerton located in Minnesota.
Howerton came up with the idea in 2007 after he had a hard time communicating with his Spanish-speaking employees that worked at his construction business. He first built a prototype that looked like a radio board with several wires hanging from it. Now, it looks a little more sleek and sophisticated, roughly the the size of a first generation cell phone.
It also works like a cell phone. By pushing a button, a user chooses what language they need to for translation. After about 30 seconds or so, the user is connected with the interpreter and they can translate the languages to help communication.
The ELSA device was released in December and RTT Mobile says that it is already in use all around the country, especially in Metropolitan and heavily diverse areas. The only drawback is cost, for underfunded emergency responders in certain areas, it can be too costly. The price of the device is $400, but it costs $2 a minute to operate it using the interpreter, so a complicated phone call can become rather expensive.
