According to The Telegraph, Britain is the biggest online shopping nation in the developed world, with almost two-thirds of the populations using the internet to purchase.
The infograph says that almost 32 million people (or 66 percent of the population) in Great Britain purchased goods or services over the internet in the last year. Food, clothing, music, holiday gifts and trips were the most commonly purchased items, bought by 60 percent of those that purchased online in 2012.
Germany has the second highest rate of online shopping in the developed world. There, it has grown 10 percent in the last four years. Italy, on the other hand, only has an online shopping rate of less than 2 percent of all purchased goods and services.
In the UK, 13.5% of all purchases were completed via the internet in 2010. The BBC reports that researchers predict online shopping will expand to a rate of 11% over the next four years, eventually accounting for 23% of all purchases and totaling a value of £221 billion by 2016.
Mobile devices are what drives the UK’s fondness for online shopping, says the infograph. 16.4 percent of internet traffic is generated by UK users who have access to the internet via smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices that connect to the internet.
