(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, February 27, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The epic prequel to the Lord of the Rings series, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” topped the award nomination totals for the Saturn Awards, with nine nods overall, including best fantasy film.
Other nominations included best director, best actor, and best supporting actor. The other films being honored with nominations were “Life of Pi,” Skyfall,” “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Looper,” “Cloud Atlas,” “Argo” and “Les Miserables.”
The assortment of quality diversity is said to underscore “the ways in which genre filmmaking has expanded beyond its roots as niche entertainment,” the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films said in its announcement.
Although there is much of Hollywood that is focusing on the Academy Awards over the weekend, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films is just getting started as a organization. The academy has announced that the awards as the only major show dedicated to “honoring the finest in genre entertainment in film, television and home entertainment.”
On the TV side of the awards, “Fringe” led the pack of six nominations, while “Dexter” and “The Walking Dead” also grabbed nominations. “Revolution,” “Doctor Who” and “Merlin” also received nods for their varying series.
The academy introduced a independent film category this year as well, much to the delight of fans across the genre.
