(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, November 21, 2012 ) PORT HURON, MI – The 6,000-square foot Great Lakes Maritime Center was the gathering place for authors of books set in Michigan and the Great Lakes area.

The books ranged from personal accounts like Dennis Hale’s Shipwrecked: Reflections of the Lone Survivor and novels set in Michigan like Dead Lock and Freeze Frame 2016 by B. David Warner.

The event is hosted each year by Frank Frisk, known as “Freighter Frank”. His office is at the Maritime Center, along with BoatNerd Headquarters. The Center offers a great view of the St. Clair River and its passing ships. There are maritime displays, an underwater camera and video clips of freighters and other marine attractions that can satisfy an entire day of maritime interest.

The event is “an excellent time to meet and talk to everyone on hand, purchase a gift for that special friend or yourself for the upcoming holiday season or just bring in your previous purchase and have it signed,” Frisk told The Voice, an area newspaper.

Hale’s book is the story of his 38 hours alone in a lifeboat after the sinking of the Daniel J. Morrell on Lake Huron in 1966. “It’s an autobiography,” he told a reporter. “People tell me that once they start reading, they can’t put it down.”

The same can be said of B. David Warner’s two novels set in Michigan. He describes Dead Lock as “a mystery/thriller” set in Sault Ste. Marie during World War II. “The Soo Locks were the most heavily guarded piece of real estate in America,” Warner said. “Nearly 90% of the iron ore bound for our defense plants had to travel through those locks. Destroying them could have changed the course of the war.”

In Warner’s novel, Detroit Times reporter Kate Brennan travels to the Soo where she goes to work for her uncle’s newspaper. Investigating the murder of a close friend, she runs headlong into a Nazi plot to destroy the locks.

Warner’s second novel set in Michigan is Freeze Frame 2016, a mystery/thriller featuring drug cartels, international terrorists and politics, all set against the fast-paced world of Detroit’s automotive advertising community.

Warner, a 40-year veteran of the Detroit advertising industry, drew from his own experiences as background for the novel.
