VeryCheapSeats.com News: Eric Clapton brings guitar festival to the Madison Square Garden

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, November 21, 2012 ) New York City, NY – Eric Clapton has announced that he will bring his world-famous Crossroads Guitar Festival—an occasional convocation of some of the best guitarists in the blues and rock genres—to Madison Square Garden on April 12 and 13, 2013. The guitar festival aims to raise money for the Crossroads Center, a drug rehab program that Clapton founded in Antigua in 1998.

Included in the line-up are Albert Lee, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, and Gary Clark Jr. for the blues bill, as well as Jeff Beck, John Mayer, the Allman Brothers Band, Taj Mahal, Jonny Lang, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, and Keb’ Mo’. However, not all of these performers will be at the festival for both nights.

2013’s Crossroads Festival is the fourth time that Clapton held the concert. Clapton is known for rising to prominence as a blues and rock guitarist with the Yardbirds and with Cream in the 1960’s. As one of the most important entertainment landmarks in the city of New York, the Madison Square Garden is the venue of choice for some of the most prestigious events of the last few decades. This multi-purpose indoor arena in midtown Manhattan is located in between Seventh and Eighth Avenues from the 31st and 33rd Streets, situated right on top of Pennsylvania Station. The arena opened its doors to the pubic in 1968, and is known among the locals as “MSG” or “the Garden.”

The Madison Square Garden is the oldest active major sporting facility in the entire New York metropolitan area, which is presently used for events involving professional ice hockey and basketball, boxing, concerts, circuses, ice shows, and other such forms of sports and entertainment. Because of its proximity to other landmarks in the area (including Macy’s at Herald Square, the Empire State Building, and Koreatown), the Madison Square Garden has always been a popular destination for both local and international tourists.

The Madison Square Garden is one of the busiest arenas in the country; it hosts around 320 events every year. Regular events in the arena include the home games of its tenant teams, as well as high-profile entertainment events such as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the NBA Draft, the Millrose Games track and field meet, the 2004 Republican National Convention, the NFL Draft, boxing events such as the Roberto Duran and Ken Buchanan match, the first Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali Bout, and more.

Over the years, large music concerts in the Big Apple were held in the Garden. George Harrison, John Lennon, The Police, Elton John, Michael Jackson, and other big name artists have all held special concerts in the venue.
