VeryCheapSeats.com News: Petrenko will conduct Shostakovich at the Walt Disney Concert Hall

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, November 21, 2012 ) Los Angeles, CA – Critically acclaimed conductor Vasily Petrenko is scheduled to conduct Shostakovich at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on November 23 (Friday, 8:00 PM), 24 (Saturday, 2:00 PM), and 25 (Sunday, 2:00 PM). Dmitri Shostakovich, a famed Russian composer, began his breathtaking composition Tenth Symphony shortly after the brutal despot Joseph Stalin died. For many Russians and classical music fans, this symphony is essentially a summary of the Stalin era, which has been called as “an optimistic tragedy.” Vasily Petrenko, on the other hand, has been widely praised for his recording of Shostakovich’s Tenth with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

Petrenko will fly to LA to direct the world-renowned local orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in three memorable performances in one of the city’s cathedral of the arts.

One of the halls of Los Angeles Music Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is bounded by Grand Avenue, Hope Street, and the 1st and 2nd Streets. This concert hall can easily seat more than two thousand people and also serves as the home of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Lillian Disney, the wife of Walt Disney, made an initial gift in 1987 to the people of Los Angeles, both as an initiative to build a performance venue and as a tribute to her husband’s devotion to the arts and the city. The famous architect Frank Gehry designed the building (which opened in October 2003), while the acoustics of the concert hall was designed by the acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota.

One of the most prominent features of this striking building is the large concert organ, which was completed in 2004. This organ was used in a special concert for the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in July 2004. Frank Gehry also designed the façade of the organ, after a thorough consultation with sound designer Manuel Rosales. Caspar Glatter-Gotz, the renowned German organ builder, built the organ under the tonal direction and voicing of Rosales. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. gifted this unique organ to the County of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra will be holding their regular concerts in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, with special guests such as Lynn Harrell, Christoph Eschenbach (who will be conducting the music of Tchaikovsky), and Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen (who will be conducting the music of Beethoven). The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra will also be celebrating Witold Lutoslawski, one of the most important European composers of the 20th century. The venue will also host the Chamber Music Society, the Toyota Symphonies for Youth, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Zubin Mehta’s 50th anniversary concert, Aaron Neville, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Idina Menzel, Midori, Renee Fleming and Susan Graham, Yefim Bronfman, and more.
