Mevagissey Feast Week Leads A "Feast of Fun" for the Whole Family says Hotel Cornwall

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 10, 2012 ) Cornwall, UK -- Situated around five miles south of St Austell, the Cornish village and fishing point of Mevagissey faces east to the stunning Mevagissey Bay. Its inner and outer harbours comprise a mix of working fishing boats and crafts which solely ferry holidaymakers around.

Within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and featuring quaint, narrow streets offering a range of places to eat and shop, Mevagissey village is a real hit with its residents and tourists.

Users of the famous Pears’ soap will be intrigued to learn that the popular bathroom toiletry was born in Mevagissey back in 1768, created by Andrew Pears who set up a barber shop in the town before moving to London.

Perhaps more interesting, though, is that local sources claim the town was the first in the country to use electric street lighting!

There’s lots to keep visitors entertained during their Mevagissey trip. Holidaymakers who’ve always fancied trying their hand at fishing can enquire about the many tourist fishing trips on offer via the town’s harbour and perhaps even be persuaded to hop aboard a boat.

Enjoy hustle and bustle? Head to Mevagissey at the end of June, when it celebrates Mevagissey Feast Week. A ‘feast of family fun, music and floral dances’, the entertainment takes place through the streets and closes at the end of the week with a huge carnival and fireworks display.

While the town doesn’t have any notable famous residents, ‘cider drinking, combine harvester driving’ country favourites, The Wurzels put Mevagissey on the map with their song ‘Mevagissey’ and the writer Susan Cooper based two of her novels (Under Stone and Greenwitch and Over Sea) in the town, which she used to visit as a small child.

Venture to Heligan near Mevagissey and enjoy the stunning Lost Gardens of Heligan. Tim Smit, the creator of the famous Eden Project, claimed the gardens and while the main house is not open to the public there are some tea rooms and other facilities located in the garden.

Alternatively, check out Mevagissey’s Model Railway. The venue’s main display comprises more than 30 trains which ‘run’ through a range of landscapes. What’s more, fun interactive buttons allow tourists to bring the models to life with actions, sound and lights – a real treat for anyone that has a love of all things automotive.

So don’t just take The Wurzels’ word for it; see why Mevagissey is the place to be! For more information on things to do and hotels in Mevagissey, please visit http://www.hotel-cornwall.com/hotels-in-st-austell-and-megavissy/
