Oklahoma City Social Entrepreneurs Launch Healthy Vending Business to Combat Obesity

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 02, 2011 ) Oklahoma City, OK -- Long-term Norman resident Jayme Seat has worked in education for the past 27 years, during which time she has paid careful attention to a growing trend: the decline of her community’s health. According to Oklahoma’s 2011 State of the State’s Health Report, Oklahoma has a 32% rate of adult obesity, which is higher than the national average. Knowing that education is integral to reshaping healthful habits and in effecting positive change, Jayme has recently set out to educate her community on healthful eating as well as to provide convenient access access to healthful foods. Alongside her husband, Lester – a retired electrician who worked with the University of Oklahoma for 23 years – Jayme has started a social business called OK Healthy Vending where she distributes HUMAN Healthy Vending machines – the world’s only eco-friendly vending machine to vend nutritious foods while simultaneously educating the consumer at the point of sale via 23” LCD screens that stream digital nutrition-related education. Already, BodyFitClub, Lakeside Women’s Hospital, Mid-American Christian University, Norman Public Library and Southwest Oklahoma City Library have signed with the Seats to offer their patrons and students these healthful alternatives.

Unlike antiquated vending machines that have long been complicit in encouraging unhealthful eating habits, HUMANÂ’s vending machines are the first full-service vending solution offering healthful snacks, drinks and entire meals along with health education streamed digitally via HD LCD screens attached to the machines. HUMANÂ’s vast product catalogue ensures that locations have convenient access to foods and drinks that meet a high caliber of nutrition standards, including the standards delineated for schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

As residents of Norman for the past 26 years and current and past employees of their local educational institutions, both Jayme and Lester feel invested in their community’s wellbeing. “We chose to partner with HUMAN Healthy Vending because, like HUMAN’s founders, we want to change the way people think about snacking,” said Jayme. “Our machines are the most technologically advanced vending machines on the market and they provide a more healthful alternative to your standard junk vending machines. We are excited to bring these to the central Oklahoma area!”

While HUMAN and its operators work tirelessly to bring healthful food to locations across the world, they realize that proper nutrition is just part of the solution to the complex problem that is the obesity epidemic. So, you will often find HUMAN operators hosting sampling events in conjunction with mission-aligned organizations that inspire and teach physical activity. These events and partnerships create a well-rounded and synergistic approach to health-related outreach.

The Seats will be holding sampling events in the upcoming weeks, including this Friday at The Southwest Oklahoma City Public Library's ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m.
