In his lengthy career, he overcame early typecasting as a lightweight pretty boy to become a serious actor. This can be seen in such films as "Sweet Smell of Success," ''Spartacus" and "The Defiant Ones." With "The Defiant Ones" he earned an Academy Award nomination.
Curtis, whose wildly undefinable cast of characters ranged from a Roman slave leading the rebellious cry of "I'm Spartacus" to a jazz age musician wooing Marilyn Monroe while disguised as a woman in "Some Like It Hot," passed away Wednesday night (29 September 2010) at the age of 85. The coroner stated he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Henderson, Nevada, near Las Vegas.
Jamie Lee Curtis, his daughter with his first wife Janet Leigh said "My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages," and "He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world."
The new web site also includes an extensive filmography. Each entry in the filmography has the film title and year of release. Some entries have additional information, such as when he did voice work, had a cameo appearance, if there were deleted scenes deleted, if the film was a documentary, and so on.
