Adventure Racing National Championship Coming to Kentucky

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 17, 2011 ) CORBIN, Ky. – The United States Adventure Racing Association has announced that its 2011 National Championship will be held at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Corbin, Ky. on October 6 – 8, 2011.

First Lady Jane Beshear said the event will help highlight some of the adventure tourism opportunities in Kentucky.

“The Cumberland Falls and Big South Fork area feature some spectacular scenery and will provide an excellent location for this competition,” Mrs. Beshear said. “We’re proud to host this event and look forward to many more like it.”

This is the first time the event will be held in Kentucky. Lexington native Stephanie Ross was chosen to direct the race.

“I’m so pleased to be able to showcase Kentucky’s outstanding natural resources to racers from across the U.S.,” said Ross. “Cumberland Falls is a real gem in the crown of Kentucky State Parks, and racers will enjoy the challenge of the rugged Daniel Boone National Forest and the beauty of the Big South Fork region, too.”

The race involves co-ed teams of three trekking, mountain biking and paddling canoes non-stop for 24 hours, using only a topographic map and compass to navigate. Teams must qualify at a regional qualifying race in order to compete.

“Adventure racing is a sport that any reasonably fit person can enjoy,” said Ross. “There are lots of beginner-friendly races out there, but the National Championship is definitely for the best of the best.”

Event sponsors include Kentucky State Parks and the Kentucky Office of Adventure Tourism. For more information, go to www.usaranationals.com.

The Kentucky State Park System is composed of 51 state parks plus an interstate park shared with Virginia. The Department of Parks, an agency of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, operates 17 resort parks with lodges -- more than any other state.
