(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 08, 2011 ) Los Angeles, CA - Shields has also made it clear that he wants to fight the best fighters in the world, but the fans clearly don't share the same interest, in fact, they want to pretend it doesn't exist at times.
Now that Anderson Silva has knocked out Vitor Belfort in a spectacular "front push kick" fashion at UFC 126: "Silva vs. Belfort" last Saturday night (February 5, 2011) in Las Vegas, everyone is ready for an Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre super fight, but there is one obstacle in the way of this happening and it is called Jake Shields.
Everyone except the UFC welterweight number one contender Jake Shields and possibly family and friends of his, feels this is the next fight for Anderson Silva. In fact, if Jake could pull off the upset of the decade, the UFC could face its first civil war among fans.
The former Elite XC and Strikeforce champion, Jake Shields, today told MMA Weekly that he intends on spoiling those plans by defeating "Rush" at UFC 129 and perhaps cementing himself as the most hated fighter in UFC history. This might be a rather easy task considering most people in the MMA community have publicly expressed that Jake Shields is a boring fighter that yawns the audience to death. His UFC debut was anything but convincing that he is at the top of the food chain in his respective weight class.
There is however a flip side to this coin, people have said the same thing about GSP and Anderson Silva as well, fighters that never lose tend to be boring because they're that good. Lets not forget that Shields also expressed an interest in testing himself against "The Spider," and that he spent the last couple of years as the 185-pound kingpin for the boys in San Jose with last names like Diaz and Melendez.
This author had the pleasure of having Jake as the head Jiu Jitsu instructor for his MMA gym in Livermore, CA, and can personally attest to his dominance in work ethic and Gracie BJJ. From a spectator point of view, it appears his stand up has vastly improved as well which makes him a bloodcurdling force to be reckoned with. For his UFC debut, Shields cut an enormous amount of weight which would naturally cause the fatigue we witnessed. The fact is he has not loss in years and deserves this chance.
Could "Silva vs. St. Pierre" become "Silva vs. Shields?" If so, It wont necessarily be the worst thing in the world, it might be just the right underdog the MMA world has been waiting for.
