(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 25, 2011 ) ESTES PARK, Colo.- YMCA of the Rockies is known for offering affordable adventure-rich family getaways and summer camps; they can now add environmental warriors to that list. In late 2010, the three newest lodges at Estes Park Center were officially LEED-certified. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, “is an internationally recognized green building certification system… developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).” During construction considerations were made to areas such as energy and water efficiency, reduction of CO2 emissions, and sensitivity to environmental impacts.
In addition to creating greener spaces for vacationers, YMCA of the Rockies is working with schools and programs across Colorado to provide experiential outdoor education for students. The Outdoor Education Coordinator sets up adventures in everything from forest ecology and the water cycle to outdoor survival skills and snowshoeing. Students learn the importance of protecting, respecting, and utilizing ColoradoÂ’s natural resources. The program also allows adult volunteers educated in relevant fields the opportunity to help.
