God, War, Lust and Honor Converge in Ireland in 'The Fog People'

The burdens of faith, sin and moving on from the past haunt "The Fog People" in a new full-length drama now available for free download at Royalty Free Plays.

In post-WW II Ireland, eight wayward souls struggle to come to grips with their future as the weight of their past blankets them like a heavy fog at daybreak. A gambler suspects that a book-maker and an athlete conspired to fix the road bowling championship match, but the gambler's gambler's suspicions are tainted by his jealousy - that the book-maker is in a relationship with his wife. The honor of all involved is shattered by accusations, reality and past betrayals to the point where truths are inconsequential to thoughts and perceptions.

"These are people screaming to break out, become someone else or something else entirely," said Terry Dugan, playwright of The Fog People, "but people are their own worst enemies. The refusal to let the past be the past makes for a forsaken future."
The Fog People tackles such topics as abortion, neutrality and killing in the name of a higher purpose, but mostly, the play looks at second-chances and free will versus predestination.

"With all your accumulated knowledge, if you were given a second chance to make things right, could you do it?" asked Dugan. "Would we tell the same lies to protect the people we lied to protect the first time? I think many people would say that they're open to new ways of thought and new ideas, but in practice, we fall back on our nature, fall back on who we think we are as individuals, if you believe that you can make your own choices."

Although some of the themes have been exploited in other dramatic works, a story that revolves around an obscure sport, such as Irish Road Bowling (a sport akin to golf where the participants roll metal balls down an open road to see whose rolls the farthest), makes for quirky, if not slightly absurd, subject matter.

"I was fortunate enough to experience Irish Road Bowling in County Cork, Ireland, and as absurd as it sounds as a sport, I instantly fell in love with the game, its participants and fans," said Dugan. "It's a sport that certainly is a labor of love for all involved, and that passion is evident at the event. Because the love is so strong, pain would run deep if they found scandal in their midst. Hopefully, the audience can appreciate that, and see the passion of honor that fuels The Fog People."
