Works By Famous Artists Hans Hofmann And George McNeil To Be Exhibited At The Morrison Gallery In Kent, CT Starting December 12th

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 02, 2009 ) KENT, CONNECTICUT – Works by two of the most influential artists of the modern era – Hans Hofmann and George McNeil -- will be exhibited at The Morrison Gallery December 12th through January 31st.

The exhibit opens Saturday December 12th with a reception in the 7,000 square foot gallery in the Barns sections of Kent. About 20 paintings and drawings by each artist have been collected for the event.

George McNeil, who died in 1995, is considered one of the preeminent American expressionist painters of the 20th Century. He studied under Hofmann and his work work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and other leading galleries.

With “avant-gardism” as his watchword McNeil was always at the forefront of the American expressionist movement. But, of the art world, he famously said: “I studiously dissociate myself from it, because I would lose my sanity if I tried to make any sense out of the art world.”

Hans Hofmann, who died in 1966m, has been recognized as one of the most important figures of postwar American art, known for his exuberant, color-filled canvases, and renowned as an influential teacher for generations of artists, including McNeil.

Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism and as a teacher he brought to America direct knowledge of the work of a celebrated group of European modernists. In addition to McNeil, his impressive list of students includes Helen Frankenthaler, Red Grooms, Alfred Jensen, Wolf Kahn, Lee Krasner, Louise Nevelson and Frank Stella.

Beginning in the mid-1940s with a one-person exhibition at Peggy GuggenheimÂ’s The Art of This Century Gallery in New York, HofmannÂ’s paintings were the subject of exhibitions at major institutions such as the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art. Hofmann was also one of four artists representing the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1960. Hofmann was close to 70 years old when, in a dazzling burst of energy he painted most of the large, highly recognizable canvases of the late 1950s and 1960s that assured his reputation. With their stacked, overlapping and floating rectangles and clear, saturated hues, these extraordinary paintings continued up until the end of his remarkable long career what Hofmann had first explored as an artist over six decades earlier.
