Fishing for history - TheMoveChannel.co.uk

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 16, 2009 ) Perthshire, Scotland - Beatrix Potter and her stories are etched onto the minds of children all over the world – and now you can buy into that history – if you’ve got a spare £760,000 that is – the Potter family’s summer holiday fishing retreat, said to have inspired one of Beatrix’s most famous characters, Jeremy Fisher, is on the market…

The Dalguise Fishings, by Dunkeld in Perthshire, Scotland was where Beatrix Potter and her family spent their summers when she was a child and it was where she developed her love of nature.

Originally owned by the Tempest Family, the fishing ‘beat’ and cottage were let on a seasonal basis during the Victorian Era, including, for several years from 1871, to the Potter Family.

It is this bank of the river that is said to have inspired the Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher – first published in 1906 - and also that of Mrs Tiggywinkle.

The 1¼ miles double bank of fishing on the sought after Middle Tay produces an annual catch of around 113 large salmon. The bank stretches from Kincraigie Burn to Rotmell and marches with the Dalmarnock Beat and is fishable both by boat and wading, as well as from the bank.

The fishings are surrounded by established woodlands and include two wildlife-laden small islands.

William Jackson, of CKD Galbraith, who are marketing the Perthshire property, said, “Dalguise is one of those most attractive beats on the Middle Tay offering a wide variety of fishing. Its catches have been remarkably consistent.”

A pretty three bedroom cottage situated in a private location close to the Dalguise Beat is also included in the sale.

Burnside Cottage is a traditional stone built home with a slate roof and has a mature garden bound by the Kincraigie Burn, with flood bank security.

Mr Jackson added, “There is so much written about Beatrix Potter’s connection with the Lake District, but people don’t realize that many of her most famous works were inspired by her time in Perthshire.”

Beatrix Potter published 22 books, beginning in 1902 with the Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Her characters and illustrations remain popular worldwide, and her life was the subject of 2006 film Miss Potter, starring Renee Zellweger.
