Zest Chiropractic's Bee Swarm

How to catch a Bee Swarm

Dr Lisa Andrews - Chiropractor in Birmingham
(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, May 22, 2015 ) Birmingham, West Midlands, UK -- Dr Lisa Andrews (Doctor of Chiropractic), the Clinic Director at Zest Chiropractic in Moseley, Birmingham, UK had a big surprise when she went to open her centre for patients to arrive yesterday.

"As soon as i opened the front door to the centre i heard this really unusual, and quite loud, noise. It wasn't something that i was expecting so it took a double take to notice all the bees flying around in my driveway! The swarm looked huge and was settling on the wall of our practice driveway!"

Unsure of what to do Birmingham Chiropractor Lisa googled for beekeeper help in her area and advice of what to do.

"I called 2 people in my local area who were listed on the national bee keeper's association website as doing swarm collection. Unfortunately no one got back to me straight away!"

The police have a record of everyone who owns bees in your area, and if they swarm it's often because they were moved and the queen, being affected, flew off and so the rest followed. Giving the police a call is advisable as a beekeeper may have contacted them to say they have lost a swarm from their hive and contact their owner to remove them.

A bee swarm are often just resting with the queen while scout bees go and find a new home. During the latter half of May is usually the earliest time to get the weather for the bees to swarm. They are not dangerous, as long as you don't touch them.

Zest Chiropractic's swarm moved onto the wall of Lisa Andrews garden. It has since moved on. Lisa said, "Initially, I thought there was 1,000 or 2,000 bees, but the beekeeper who came to my house later told me that there was most likely around 15,000 bees in the swarm." Bee swarms are relatively harmless. They've gorged on honey before they moved and are only looking for a new home.

Luckily, after about four hours the swarm were beginning to move on, hopefully to a new permanent home. At Zest Chiropractic life resumed to resolving lower back pain, headaches and sciatica rather than worrying about how the clinic's patients were dodging the swarm to make it into the centre.

There has been considerable concern recently about whether the rapid increase in popularity of beekeeping, especially in urban areas, by people with only an extremely limited knowledge of how to care for their hives is related to the apparent increase in swarms. If a hive is not well maintained there is a greater chance of the swarm becoming unsettled and deciding to move on. The crucial thing to remember is that the bees are most interested in just finding a new home, and they are not there to try and sting you!
