Hot Metro Finds Reviews The Cult's Recent Tour At Royal Oak Music Theater

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, August 21, 2014 ) Royal Oak, Michigan - The Cult burst onto the scene in 1986 in a big way. The album was, “LOVE” and it slammed the MTV airwaves and the college crowd loved it. Within a few weeks it popped up onto the Rolling Stone top ten ranking college albums. The traditional rock and roll audience kind of blew it off as nothing serious and even poked fun of the albums status. “LOVE”, was big, powerful, and it had the club dance hit, “She Sells Sanctuary”. It brought back this quasi appreciation for the late 60’s, mysticism, and it called for introspection. The album was moody and very atmospheric and the biggest release up to date.

The band rolled into Royal Oak Music Theater in August 7, 2014 with one mission in mind and that was to completely rock the house. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy were the original members of this incredibly powerful band and the fan base was waiting in anticipation. This group has not lost its heart throbbing sound and the return of the Cult was met with applause and open arms. The stage was stripped down into bare essentials. There were no large stage props or digital display backdrops. Instead there was low Orange guitar amps and a drum kit that was wired to the microphones and simple stage lights but it was enough.

Lead singer, Ian Astbury grabbed the mic with a vengeance and tore through classics like, “Rain”, “Honey From A Knife”, “Lil Devil” and, “Love Removal Machine”. Then the band launched into some surprises like, “Spiritwalker” which goes back to a time before Youtube.com and even CD’s. The early tracks from The Cult and the bands earlier incarnation, The Southern Death Cult came off as a surprise. Those early tracks were not easily available to the mass public and only existed as imports. The fan base in Royal Oak was hungry enough and dedicated enough to appreciate those early works.

The band also created t-shirts for sale that commemorated the classic 1987 album, “Electric” and utilized the art from that era. The Cult also gave the fans a little extra with some of its newer material like, “Embers” and “Gone”. Both of these tracks have incredible drive and a pounding sound.
