It is used by electric guitar and bass guitar players to create a particular sound or clean up "sloppy" sounds caused when strings are left to openly vibrate. This is most notable when using a lot of distortion while playing.
Self-taught guitarists often think it is their lack of playing skill that causes the unwanted sound when in fact it is the lack of awareness or know-how of muting techniques.
MAC Music Accessories enlisted the help of pub/punk band The Manchester Social Club frontman, Nate Beck to teach the most common muting techniques. In the just-released video, Beck demonstrates a left hand muting technique, a thumb muting technique and two palm muting techniques on the electric guitar and explains when to use each.
