City Councilors Prevent Charity Fundraiser

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, July 01, 2013 ) Montreal, Canada -- In Sanford Maine on Tuesday, city councilors denied a request for a charity car wash fundraiser. The Sanford city councilors voiced safety concerns over the matter but there seems to be more of a controversy over the volunteers who were to wash the cars. Love Birds, a Portland adult escort service had volunteered their services for the event.

The fundraiser was to take place this Saturday and Sunday in the Mid-Town Mall parking lot. Snip & Tone hair salon and its owner Alicia Rowe organized the car wash to raise money for Child Care Services of York County. Snip & Tone stands adjacent to the Mid-Town Mall parking lot. However, the parking lot is owned by the city. To hold the event it requires permits from code enforcement, the city fire marshal and police department.

It would seem that these city officials are very concerned about cars blocking pathways and pedestrians tripping over the hoses on the sidewalk while they watch the girls wash the cars. Rowe argued that the girls would not be wearing bikinis, only shorts and tank tops. “Staging vehicles in the travel lanes of the parking area will obstruct vehicular traffic,” commented Deputy Chief of Police Tim Strout on the matter. “Tripping hazards are huge and the city assumes all responsibility,” City Manager Steven Buck had to say.

Sanford city councilors have stood by their claim that their main concerns were safety but some admitted that they were a little concerned with the nature of the event. “This is public-owned in the center of downtown,” argued council member Fred Smith. “It will affect this city’s image.”

Rowe insists she is going to have the car wash this weekend anyway. She is currently looking for a more private parking lot for the event. In the meanwhile, the Child Care Services of York County has told her they want their name pulled from the event. “The children’s center said they didn’t want their name mixed up with Love Birds,” said Rowe. As of Wednesday, the children’s center could not be reached for comment.
