(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, April 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It does not take much more than a glance at a shirt label to find out that the apparel industry is a global network. However, for a handful of fashion students, comprehending the “made in China” garments journey into the United States is a much more complex and fascinating process than many others get to enjoy.
Participating in a domestic study abroad, eight undergraduates spent their 2013 Winter Session in Washington D.C., as well as North Carolina, where they attended a behind-the-scenes look at the government's roles in the policies surrounding trade. They also were given a chance to see a the American textile industry.
With the average tariff running 5% to 30% “everybody has a position and it’s not always the same,” explains Martha Carper, assistant professor in the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies. “Political decisions affect the economies of countries and the lives of individuals who live and work in communities across the globe, from China, to Mexico, to the U.S.”
For a stronger understanding of how governments impact the apparel industry, the students were allowed to meet with international specialists in the trade industry, along with economic counselors and leaders of national trade organizations.
Each was able to discuss the Fashion Piracy Bill along with the sponsoring senator's staff members. The students also partook in a mock free trade bill negotiation on the Senate floor, allowing them to make pending agreements and administration submitted for congressional approval (all mock-items of course).
“We had actual Senate staff members participating and coaching us throughout the process,” wrote Morgan Hyman in the student’s blog. “Overall, it was amazing being apart of the mark up because we learned so much that could have never been taught to us in a classroom.”
