Funding Nonexistent for Textbooks at Schools reports Left Books

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, January 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It appears that there may be no longer a use for the term “take out your textbooks”, as the state budget for textbook purchases is now nonexistent.

That lack of funding is driving the search for a new way for students to gain their information. Naturally, it appears to be the electronic variety that is interesting students the most.

Schools are making do with the books that they do have, stretching the replacement cycles and repairing the worn volumes that are at all salvageable.

State funding has now dwindled from $21 million in 2008 to nil in the current year, says Nancy Rodriguez, who works as Kentucky Department of Education. The department of the state Board of Education has lobbied for more money in 2013, but there seems to be little hope of improvement, according to Rodriguez.

At the start of the century, when Mark Baker served as principal for the Lewis County High School, his district was on the receiving end of more than $50 per student from the textbook fund. Nowadays, the district-wide program director of Greenup County school says “It has been several years since the state has financed the purchase of books.”

Baker's district replaces the current books only when it is deemed absolutely necessary. That term, according to Baker, is p to the teachers to define, and those teachers are urged to use the term sparingly. It uses money it otherwise would allocate to other functions when it buys books.

Textbooks are often much more expensive than the best of bestsellers at consumer bookstores. The average text can cost $65 and up per volume, according to the educators interviewed for this history.

The district has begun to buy netbooks and iPads to allow students to use their own smart phones to access information, rather than have to foot the bill for the books that are often necessary tools for learning.
