(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, December 07, 2012 ) Vic, Australia -- Keswick has earned the title of the best Dog Friendly Town in the United Kingdom by the Kennel Club.
The town, which is located in the borough of Allerdale in Cumbria, earned the honor through voting in an online poll by the Kennel Club. The Dog Friendly Town is part of the Kennel Club's Open for Dogs Awards.
Keswick ranked first in the online poll, besting more than 28,000 towns and business in the U.K.
Keswick Tourism Association officer Linda Furniss said that the town was thrilled to win the honor.
"Keswick is just such a perfect base to explore the fells, woodland and lakeside walks, with masses of open space to get out for long walks with your dog," Furniss said.
Kennel Club Secretary Caroline Kisko said Keswick stood as a shining example to the many towns that have already adopted "dog-friendly atmospheres."
"They are reaping the benefits of being open for dogs," Kisko said. "The people of Keswick show that they are willing to go above and beyond for their own four-legged friends, as well as those that are just visiting, which is consistent with the U.K.'s love affair with dogs."
The Open for Dogs campaign recognizes locales and businesses that are considered to be dog friendly. The awards available include honors for dog-friendly hotels, self-catering, camping and caravan sites, pubs, beaches, and places for days out. The six-year-old competition aims to encourage more places to be dog friendly and is based on the views of the public.
All winners of the Open for Dogs Awards were presented with their awards at the Kennel Club's Discover Dogs event at Earls Court, London on November 10.
