Storm-Displaced Pets Still Homeless reports Pet Friendly Accommodation Great Ocean Road

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, December 07, 2012 ) Vic, Australia -- Several weeks after Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the Northeastern United States, residents are still dealing with the aftermath, including cleanup and repairs. People are not the only ones affected. Pets have felt the brunt of the storm as well.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that in New York City and on Long Island more than 300 animals have been rescued. The agency has treated or supplied 13,000 animals that are working with government or private animal welfare agencies, according to ASPCA spokeswoman Emily Schneider.

In New York City, shelters took in hundreds of families that included about 400 animals in the days after the storm struck. Two weeks later, there were still more than 100 animals still in shelters with their owners. Decimated neighborhoods on Staten Island and in the Rockaways section of Queens are being searched by mobile animal medical clinics.

One Manhattan shelter takes in animals 24 hours per day, waiting for their owners to show up and claim them.

The story is much the same in New Jersey. Approximately 60 displaced animals per day have rescued by first responders using boats and mobile units to search the state's barrier islands hit hard by the storm.

Under federal law, rescuing animals is mandatory, so local and state governments must include plans for pets during emergencies such as natural disasters. A certain amount of funds from Federal Emergency Management Agency are designated for the welfare of animals in disaster zones.

Social media has also joined in the effort, posting pictures of lost pets and those that are currently being held in shelters, trying to reconnect displaced pets with their owners.

In New York City, shelters are required to accept pets. Taxis and public transportation vehicles are required to do so as well.

Owners feel an attachment and responsibility to their pets, said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States. While some people cannot understand why animals are a key concern in disasters, the effect they have on human lives helps heal some of the wounds that have been inflicted as a result of the disaster.

"There's such a strong bond between people and animals that people will put their lives at risk not to leave a pet behind," Dawson said. "So they stay, even when they're told to evacuate, and that puts first responders going back for them at risk."

Similar to their owners, many of the animals that did survive the storm won't be going home anytime soon. As a result, many are being fed and housed thanks to strangers.

Numerous trailers in the affected area have distributed pet food and supplies, like leashes and cat litter, from a warehouse in Queens set up days before Hurricane Sandy hit, according to Schneider. Food donations have been made by a number of organizations, including Del Monte Foods, Iams, the Petco Foundation, Petsmart Charities, and Purina.

It will be months before it will be known how many pets died or were lost during the storm.
