For example, surfboards are often made from toxic foam and synthetic resins, with nearly 20% of the foam used during the shaping process ending up in landfills. While this is problematic for the environment, EnviroSurfer offers alternative solutions, including epoxy boards, that Moore says are more durable and have a longer life span, as well as boards made from natural ingredients, such as bamboo, which means the environment is exposed to less toxicity. As far as surf wetsuits go, according to Moore’s research, these surf necessities are often constructed using synthetic rubber, glue and solvents and toxic chemicals including PVC, all of which can be toxic to both the wearer and the environment. EnviroSurfer offers a number of wetsuits that do not contain PVC, and they also retail a number of thinner suits that use less neoprene.
According to Moore, and the team at EnviroSurfer, surfing is about a love and respect for the ocean and the environment, which makes it important for surfers to understand ways they can reduce their impact on nature.
"In an industry where the consumers depend on the ocean, it is vital for us to be using only eco-friendly materials and production processes that don't damage where we love to be,” said Moore.
