Since then, Mary Poppins has become one of the most treasured shows on Broadway. This year is currently its fifth year at the New Amsterdam Theatre, and based on released schedule, the open-ended run will continue until 2013, which will thus be its 6th year in the same venue. As of now, the full schedule of shows until July 2013 has been released. The show, which debuted on November 16, 2006, runs for two hours and 40 minutes with one intermission.
The Broadway hit and Tony award-winning musical Mary Poppins continues to delight audiences onstage. Its world-renowned whimsical and unforgettable story plus its timeless tunes together bring New Yorkers as well as visitors from all parts of the world to the New Amsterdam Theatre.
Mary Poppins is based on the classic story written by P.L. Travers. In 1964, it was adapted into a film by Walt Disney. The musical incorporates elements from both the story and the movie, but uses original music and lyrics penned by the composers of the film, Robert and Richard Sherman. The book adapted for the stage was written by Julian Fellowes, while choreography is courtesy of Matthew Bourne.
The revived musical features Ashley Brown as the title character. So far, it has received high ratings and has been referred to as a ‘perfect piece of musical theater’. Last year, in 2011, it also surpassed Pippin as the 30th longest running show in the history of Broadway.
Aside from the regular shows on Broadway, in the years 2008, 2009, and 2010, the musical also went on U.S. tours to bring the timeless story to audiences in other locations.
Due to the popularity of Mary Poppins’ story, it has also sparked several international productions. The first professional regional production is scheduled to take place at Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick, Maine. The initial schedule is August 7 to 24, 2013, although no casting details have been released as of press time. Another production is also scheduled on August 9 to 18, 2013 at the Music Theatre of Wichita.
