(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, October 04, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Funeral services for an Edmonton girl who had allegedly been beaten and starved to death by her parents in late May drew hundreds of people to a mosque last Saturday.
The two-year-old girl, known only as “M,” died Sept. 20 at Stollery Children’s Hospital after a motion to continue her life support was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Canada. She had been in a coma since May 25 with irreversible brain damage.
Funeral goers, including many who do not know the family, expressed their sorrow surrounding the tragic situation.
When paramedics arrived at the girl’s Edmonton home, they found her in cardiac arrest with a head injury. Her twin sister also was malnourished. Both the girl’s twin sister and older brother were placed in foster care following the incident.
The parents, who also are unidentified, face charges of aggravated assault, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life. They remain in custody and the charges could be upgraded now that the girl has died. Both the mother and father attended the girl’s funeral but were not allowed to contact each other.
The funeral was held at the mosque of Imam Mustafa Khattab. The family was not members but he was summoned to pray over the girl in the hospital and took responsibility for the funeral.
Khattab said many people were saddened by news of the girl’s death although they did not know the family.
